Welcome to H-LP

Miss Kayla Aeikens is another new elementary teacher that we welcome this year. She has a first grade position at H-LP.

Miss Aikens

Before coming to this school, she worked at Cutty's Okoboji Resort and Club in the Activities Department. In fact, this past summer was her fourth summer there, and she still works part time there during the off season.

Why did Miss Aeikens decide to become a teacher? She said, “I wanted to become a teacher because I want to be the person to make a difference in a child's life. I want to be the person to say that I helped that child get the education they needed to be able to graduate high school, college, or get their first job. I also wanted to become a teacher to be a stable person in a child's life. Teachers are like parents, and I wanted to be a person that a child could rely on and always go to if they needed help.”

Kayla has local roots in northwest Iowa. She was born and raised in Spirit Lake and currently lives there. She graduated high school in 2011 from Spirit Lake and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in May 2016. She has a bachelor's degree in Elementary and Early Childhood Education with a minor in Literacy.

Her student teaching was also nearby as she  student taught for 16 weeks at the Graettinger- Terril/Ruthven-Ayshire School District at the Terril Building. The first 8 weeks were in a 4th/5th grade classroom and the last 8 weeks were in a 3/4 year old Preschool room! She was able to get a wide experience during student teaching.

Miss Aeikens’ favorite subject is science. She said, “I love exploring new things and seeing what different experiments you can do with kids. Science is a subject that most kids don't enjoy, and I want to show them that science can be really fun and entertaining.”

She starts the school year with great goals, and one is to be the absolute best teacher she can. She wants to see all of her students succeed and will do everything she can to make sure that happens. Another goal is to be involved in the district as much as she can to get to know everyone!

Kayla has three older sisters in her family: Shannon, Amanda, and Missy. She enjoys spending time with friends and family. She also loves going boating and swimming and reading a good book.

First graders are a lot of work, but Miss Aeikens knows that she has stepped into the right career. She said, “I have learned so much about my students in the first weeks of school and am excited to see how much they grow over the rest of the school year!’
