Special Olympics

The sun was shining and a team gathered together on the lawn south of Hilton Coliseum, in Ames, IA. This is how the summer games began for Special Olympics of Iowa for the Spirit Lake Park team. We had eight athletes representing the team this year. From Harris-Lake Park schools, Blainne Stone, a junior and son of Jeff and Shannon Stone, competed in cycling and track and field events. Jamin Ehlers, a fourth grader and son of Ben and Jolene Ehlers, competed in cycling and track events. Matthew Stone, sixth grader and also the son of Jeff and Shannon Stone; served as a peer helper for Jamin.

Blainne and Jamin qualified for their track and field events at Regionals in Milford, IA in April on a very cold and rainy day. But as the Spirit Lake Park team competed in their cycling events on Thursday, May 19 we had to worry about applying enough sunscreen. In morning, Blainne rode the 1K and received silver. Then in the afternoon, Blainne and Jamin both received gold in their 250m events respectfully. The opening ceremony was in the evening, all the athletes, coaches, and peer helpers entered the coliseum through the lower tunnel. This is an awesome spectacle to watch, it really put things in perspective. On Friday, Jamin ran his 50m dash and placed fourth. While Blainne competed in shot put with a very close finish of fifth place. Jamin and the rest of the team left as their events concluded. Blainne stayed behind and ran his final event on Saturday morning, the 200m dash with a gold place finish.

So as another year winds down, we would like to thank everyone for their support, whether it was coming out to our annual Get Up & Bowl event, the car cruise meal, purchasing t-shirts, butterbraids, or supporting us during our training in the hallways and out in the streets. We would like to say thank you! Our next event is Unified Golf in August in Spencer, IA. See you in the fall. Pictures are the SLP team camp site, Blainne receiving silver for cycling, and Jamin getting ready to ride the 250m event.
