A Run For Their Money

For the first time since around 1980, Harris-Lake Park has its own boys’ track team! There is a total of 16 boys out. The 7 freshmen include Keegan Carpenter, Jayden Gilge, Trevor Gunderson, Bryce Perkins, Brandon Bunkers, Bret Sohn, and Zachary Heikens. My fellow sophomores are Joshua Bridgeman, Brandon Bunkers, Cale Hellinga, Jordan Kyle, and Greg Vellema. The junior class has three boys out this season: Dahlton Burdorf, Darin Hesebeck, and Thor Larson. Last, but not least, our senior participant is Skylar Cudmore.

The practices started February 23. At practice they like to focus on good conditioning and the techniques for field events, handoffs, starts, etc.

The boys participated in a meet on Friday, April
10. Their CCE Relays at Spencer results went pretty
well. For our 1st place recipients we have Darin
Hesebeck for high jump topping the scores with
5’8” and Cale Hellinga in the 400 meter dash at a
time of 55.34 seconds. Skylar Cudmore came in
2nd for long jump with a length of 17’7”. Skylar
Cudmore also threw a shot put 39’7” for third
place along with third place finishes for Dahlton
Burdorf in the 100 meter dash completing it in
11.79 seconds and our 4 × 100 relay with Skylar
Cudmore, Trevor Gunderson, Keegan Carpenter,
and Cale Hellinga receiving a time of 4:00.29.

Our fourth placement rating groups were the 4 × 200 relay at a time of 1:40.56 with Skylar Cudmore, Trevor Gunderson, Dahlton Burdorf, and Darin Hesebeck running and the 1600 medley with 4:12 featuring Dahlton Burdorf, Darin Hesebeck, Cale Hellinga, and Greg Vellema. The only fifth place recipient was Darin Hesebeck in the 200 meter dash.

The team also traveled to Orange City on April 13 for the Unity Co-Ed Invite. For a few of the results, Darin Hesebeck captured second in the high jump while the shuttle hurdle team of Josh Bridgeman, Greg Vellema, Jayden Gilge, and Brandon Bunkers took third.

The team is coached by Eric Clouse and Lane Gunderson. Coach Gunderson stated, “I think that they’ll improve a lot through the year,” when asked how he felt the remainder of the season will proceed.

Good luck to you boys for the rest of the season! Glad to see track back at H-LP!
